About Hilroy

1918 - 1920July 4, 1918, Hilroy commenced operation. Disregarding the pessimism of skeptical business associates, Roy Corson Hill, borrowed $432 on a life insurance policy and added it to $1,500 his parents obtained by mortgaging their home. With this capital, he formed his own stationery company. Canadian Pad and Paper Co. Limited.

Operations commenced on the second floor of a re-modeled residence situated at 255 Wellington Street in Toronto using rented second-hand equipment and employing six people including himself.

Hill was the manager, salesman, shipper, receiver and paper cutter. He worked between 7am and 11pm. In the evenings he would cut and trim the pads of books manufactured during the day. His wife would come to the factory by streetcar to wrap and label the days production.

Roy Hill invested an additional $8,000 to keep pace with the growth of the company.

1920 - 1940Due to the need for further expansion, Roy Hill broke his five-year lease and moved the business to 520 King Street where he continues to operate for the next 10 years.

Roy Hill built a new factory at 240 Madison Avenue. Basing his business philosophy on honesty, integrity and quality and treating his employees with dignity and respect, traditions maintained to this day, the company prospered.

Canadian Pad and Paper Co. purchased the entire stock of Eaton, Crane and Pike Limited.

1940 - 1960Roy Hill purchased the entire assets of L.P. Bouvier Co. Limited and formed a new company known as Bouvier Envelopes Limited.

Roy Hill was again forced to move to bigger premises, as a result, purchased 11 acres of land from the township of York at the corner of Bowie and Caledonia for $10,000 cash. Two years later he sold two of his 11 acres, leaving him nine acres free from any cost or payment.

The manufacturing facility at 250 Bowie was built, housing 145,000 sq ft. with its own private railway siding. Due to various additions over the years, the facility grew to over 250,000 sq ft.

Canadian Pad and Paper Co. Limited merged with Eaton, Crane and Pike Limited and Bouvier Envelopes limited and began operating under the name Hilroy Envelopes and stationery Limited.

Hilroy Envelopes and stationery Limited bought the Canadian stationery Co. Limited in Joliette, Quebec.

1960 - 1980The Canadian Envelope Co. Ltd in Montreal and the Canada Envelope Co. Ltd in Toronto were purchased.

Roy Hill founded Hilroy Envelopes and stationery Limited in New Westminster, British Columbia.

Hilroy Envelopes (Western) Limited in Winnipeg, Hilroy Quebec Limitee in Monteal and Hilroy Envelopes and stationery in Calgary were formed.

The Envelope division was transferred from 250 Bowie Avenue to another location and became Canada Envelope (a sister company). Canada Envelope later become known as Innova.
